OpenAI, one of the world”s leading artificial intelligence (AI) companies, has appointed 34-year-old Mira Murati as its interim CEO, replacing founding CEO Sam Altman, who stepped down due to disagreements with the board of directors. Murati”s appointment is a testament to her merit and capabilities.
For the past three years, as Chief Technology Officer, Murati has demonstrated her management prowess by streamlining operations. She has led the engineering team in developing ChatGPT versions, strengthened the company”s relationship with Microsoft as an investor and partner, and played a crucial role in designing AI strategies across the US and Europe.
As Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella aptly wrote in a piece about her for Time magazine, “She has a demonstrated ability to assemble teams with technical expertise, commercial acumen, and a deep appreciation for the importance of mission. As a result, Mira has helped build some of the most exciting AI technologies we”ve ever seen.”
While advanced research has progressed over the decade, machine learning and generative chatbots have only recently materialized, especially with the advent of ChatGPT and DALL-E. OpenAI”s contribution to this is vital, and many have played crucial roles in making ChatGPT a reality. Murati is one of those key figures.
Under Mira Murati”s leadership, academic research has successfully transformed into practical products, making AI more accessible. This approach has ignited widespread global interest in AI.
Born in Albania and raised in Canada, Murati aced in building a hybrid race car during her time at Dartmouth College, showing her mechanical engineering skills.
Before joining OpenAI, she also gained experience in the aerospace, automotive, virtual reality (VR), and augmented reality (AR) industries. At Elon Musk”s Tesla, she played a pivotal role in developing the Model X as a senior product manager.
Ms. Murati also worked with a VR company, Leap Motion, before joining OpenAI in 2018, where she took on responsibilities in supercomputing strategy and research team management. She was also part of the leadership team and contributed to implementing the team”s decisions.
