Meanwhile, the rise in private schools has pointed out to an alternative demand among the public, most of whom allegedly think that private education is more efficient and safe.

The total number of government schools in India declined from 10,32,049 in 2020-21 to 10,13,322 in 2024-25, which indicates 18,727 government schools were closed over a period of five years, as per the official government data.

The data indicate a slow but consistent contraction of government schooling infrastructure, which has traditionally served as the backbone of affordable education, particularly in rural and economically disadvantaged regions.
