During the presentation of Union budget 2025, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced a series of initiatives for the education sector. She said broadband connectivity will be provided to all government secondary schools and primary health centres in rural areas. Sitharam is presenting her eighth consecutive Union Budget under the governance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The move is said to be under Bharat Net project. It is a government-led project that provides high-speed broadband connectivity to rural and remote areas of India. Launched in 2011, the project claims to aim to deliver high-speed internet across villages and towns through an optical fiber network to connect villages and towns.
She also proposed to implement Bharatiya Basha Pustak scheme, which is aimed at providing digital form of Indian language books for schools and higher educations.

“Broadband connectivity will be provided to all government secondary schools and primary health centers in rural areas under the Bharat Net project. We propose to implement a Bharatiya Basha Pustak scheme to provide digital form Indian language books for schools and for higher education…”, she said during the Union Budget presentation.
The Finance Minster also spoke about expanding capacity in IIT. She said the number of students in 23 IITs has increased by 100% in the last 10 years. “Additional infrastructure will be created in 5 IITs created after 2014 for 6,500 students”, she further added. Sitharaman also announced a social security scheme for the upliftment of gig workers or those associated with online platforms.
