
Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Union budget 2025 in the Parliament today. Along with all other sectors, the spotlight is shed on education, health, and much-anticipated tax reliefs.
The growing demand for increased spending in higher education, skill development, digital learning, and research led to an increased allocation for the education sector. So here are the key announcements for the education sector:
50,000 Atal Tinkering Labs will be set up in the next 5 years
The Finance Minister in her eighth consecutive budget, announced the setting up of 50,000 Atal Tinkering Labs in the next 5 years to cultivate scientific temper in young minds.
Presenting the Union Budget 2025, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced broadband connectivity will be provided to all government secondary schools and primary healthcare centers.
Additional infrastructure in five IITs
Nirmala Sitaraman also announced that the government would create additional infrastructure in five IITs and proposed to expand IIT Patna.
Bharatiya Bhasha Pushtak scheme
As per the budget, the government will launch a Bharatiya Bhasha Pushtak scheme to provide a digital form of Indian language books for schools and higher education. The finance minister also said that this initiative will help students to understand their subjects better.
National center for skilling with global expertise.
The finance minister also announced that 5 national centers of excellence for skilling will be set up with global expertise and partnerships. This initiative aims to equip the youth with the required skills.
Centre For excellence in Artificial Intelligence
She also announced a center for excellence in artificial intelligence for education with a total outlay of 500 crores to be set up.
Increase in medical seats
Next year, an additional 10,000 seats will be added in medical colleges and hospitals, the FM announced, adding that as many as 75,000 seats will be added in the next five years.
In 2024-25, the Ministry of Education was allocated Rs 1,20,628 crore. This was a decrease of 7% from the revised estimate for 2023-24.
