Birla Institute of Technology And Science, Pilani (BITS Pilani), a noted private engineering and science institution on Wednesday signed an MoU with the Defence Institute of Advanced Technology, Pune, a premier institute under the Department of Defence Research and Development (DRDO) to cooperate in joint research projects.
The partnership aims to venture joint research, develop cutting edge-technology and upskill professionals, in addition to nurturing entrepreneurship in critical technology domains. The cooperation between the two esteemed institutions was facilitated through the Center For Research Excellence in National Security (CRENS).

Both institutions will engage in knowledge exchange through activities such as workshops, seminars and conferences in the field of national security. The collaboration’s primary aim is joint research work, which will be carried out by the two institutions together. The joint research projects would include short-term consultancy assignments for addressing specific issues in the industry. The venture also dreams of exploring emerging and future potentials.

The agreement would facilitate joint usage of faculty, research scholars, and lab infrastructures. Speaking about the initiative, Prof. Ramgopal Rao, Vice-Chancellor, BITS Pilani, said that their partnership with DIAT Pune reflects a shared vision that through research and innovation, we can synergistically elevate the defence capability of India and give a technological push to India.
A representative from DIAT Pune has highlighted that the institution is committed to fostering India’s defence technological advancements through focused research, innovation, and skill development. “BITS Pilani has always been at the forefront of innovation and our partnership with the prestigious institution will allow us to syndicate resources and expertise to address challenging issues hindering National Security and create an ecosystem for collaboration, innovation, and entrepreneurship,” the statement reads.
To meet the growing demand for skilled professionals in emerging technologies, BITS Pilani and DIAT will design and deliver certification courses in a hybrid format. These programs will cater to working professionals in Indian PSUs, industries, and organizations, particularly those in the National Security sector.
