The degree colleges in Assam will not consider the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) scores for admission to undergraduate courses during the 2024-25 academic session due to the absence of a clear directive from the state government or universities.
The general secretary of Assam College Principals” Council Ranjan Kalita said that most colleges will enroll students in different undergraduate courses such as BA, BSc, BCom, and BBA based on the marks scored by the candidates in the class XII board examination.
Assam has nearly 345 general degree colleges, including government and provincialised institutions. Admission to the UG courses in the state takes place through the Assam higher education admission portal, which is a unified encrypted digital platform under the Samarth e-Gov suite.
Reportedly, the state higher education department has not made the CUET score mandatory as awareness about the exam has not reached the expected level so far. Many students won”t get admission this year if CUET becomes mandatory due to the lack of knowledge about the common entrance yet.
However, some universities and colleges in Assam such as Cotton University and Arya Vidyapeeth College are taking admission based on CUET scores. Some colleges have allocated a proportion of the total seats to the admission via CUET score. In Cotton University, 40% of the seats will be filled up from CUET and those appeared in the common entrance exam will get priority in admission process.
Colleges are still waiting for the clear directives on CUET being mandatory for the admission. Till then, the performance of students in Class XII will be used to prepare the cut off and there will be no differentiation between students from different boards. However, the application process will take place through Samarth while CUET will not be given preference.
