The Congress on Monday, in sharp tones, attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for missing Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore”s name from the new plaques installed at West Bengal”s Visva-Bharati University. The plaques inscribes Prime Minister as ‘Acharya”, and Prof. Bidyut Chakrabarty as ‘Upacharya (Vice Chancellor)’but fails to mention Tagore”s name, who founded the university.

It was on September 17 this year, Santiniketan in West Bengal”s Birbhum district was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. Established in 1901 by poet and philospher Tagore, Santiniketan, was a residential school and centre for art. In 1921,  a ‘world university” was founded at Santiniketan, recognising the unity of humanity or “Visva Bharati.”

To denote Santiniketan’s inclusion in the World Heritage List, three marble plaques saying “UNESCO Inscribed World Heritage Site” have been installed inside the premises mentioning PM Modi”s and Vice Chancellor”s name. The missing Tagore”s name has erupted controversy and several opposition leaders reacted.

Taking to X, Congress General Secretary (Communications) Jairam Ramesh slammed the government, and wrote: “Erasure of Nehru wasn’t enough. Now, erasure of Rabindranath Tagore also begins.”

Similarly, Congress General Secretary (organisation) KC Venugopal in strong words attacked PM Modi and wrote on social media that today, omitting Tagore, “the chief peddler of fear, hate and division has now named himself “Acharya” at the great Santiniketan”. He then added that “Delusion knows no limits.”

Not just Congress, but Trinamool Congress (TMC) also attacked PM Modi in this regard; TMC MP Jawhar Sircar  wrote on X: “A megalomaniac VC and his boss seem to think UNESO is honouring them!!”

Meanwhile, Hindustan Times reports that officials have told the newspaper that the controversial plaques would be replaced soon.
