IMD Issues Orange Alert In Palgar District; School And Colleges To Remain Shut

The District Collector Office in Palghar, Maharashtra has announced that all the schools and colleges will remain closed today as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert. IMD has also issued an alert for Mumbai and Thane and stated to have a heavy to very heavy rainfall at few places.

In Palghar District, heavy to very heavy rain falls at a few places, and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places has been expected by the latest weather bulletin. Similar alerts were issued for Raigad, Pune, and Satara districts in Maharashtra.

IMD alert people ahead of severe or hazardous weather to prevent potential damage, widespread disruption or danger to life. These warnings are updated daily. The IMD uses 4 colour codes for the warning the includes Green, Yellow, Orange and Red warning.

  • Green warning means ‘All is well’ –  No advisory is issued.
  • Yellow warning means ‘Be Aware’: Yellow indicates severely bad weather spanning across several days. It also suggests that the weather could change for the worse, causing disruption in day-to-day activities.
  • Orange or Amber means ‘Be prepared’: The orange alert is issued as a warning of extremely bad weather with the potential of disruption in commute with road and rail closures, and interruption of power supply.
  • Red means ‘Take Action’: When the extremely bad weather conditions are certainly going to disrupt travel and power and have significant risk to life, the red alert is issued.

In Mumbai, the city remained affected due to rain that blocked the local train services during the peak hours in the morning. Due to the unavailability of the local trains, citizens were seen walking towards their offices on the railway tracks. Mumbai is also facing severe waterlogging on city roads. Traffic congestion and slow vehicular movement were witnessed amid incessant rainfall.

The three teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were deployed to handle any emergency in the state. Eknath Shinde, the state Chief Minister has also asked officials to remain on high alert.

In Pune district the heavy rain has cause death of 4 individuals, where 3 people were electrocuted while one other dies in a landslide.
