Jamia Millia Islamia Celebrates Its104th Foundation Day

Jamia Millia Islamia University, New Delhi is observing its 104th foundation day from Oct 28 and Oct 29. On the occasion of its foundation day, several cultural events were observed on the university campus attended by students, teachers, and alumni of JMI.

Jamia Millia Islamia made a modest start in 1920 at Aligarh to create an institution to manifest the ethos and spirit of plurality with the efforts of its founding members – Shaikhul Hind Maulana Mahmud Hasan, Maulana Muhammad Ali Jauhar, Jenab Hakim Ajmal Khan, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad Ansari, Jenab Abdul Majeed Khwaja, and Dr. Zakir Hussain.

In the last 104 years, since its establishment in 1920, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) achieved many milestones in terms of academic standards, and national and international standing. The university was established by an Act of Parliament and was originally located in Alighar in United Province however, it was later moved to Karog Bagh in Delhi in 1925 to Jamia Nagar.

The UGC gave JMI the deemed status in 1962 and in 1988, it attained the status of a central university through an act of Indian Parliament. In 2011, the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions (NCMEI) declared Jamia Millia Islamia as a religious minority institution in view of the fact that Jamia Millia Islamia was founded by Muslims for the benefit of the community and it never lost its identity as a Muslim minority educational institution.

In 2006, when King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia paid his visit to India, he visited the university and donated $30 million.

In the recent NIRF ranking, Jamia was ranked third among the universities in India and accreditated NAAC A++ Grade. In the Times Higher Education ranking in 2023, JMI was ranked 501-600 in the world and in the QS World University Rankings, it was ranked 801-1000 in the world.

Recently, the JNU Professor Mazhar Alam is appointed as the Vice Chancellor of the University by the President of India.
