JMI Issues Notice To PhD Student For Participating In Protest

Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, has issued a show-cause notice to a PhD scholar, accusing him of repeated unlawful acts and inciting students on religious lines during a protest march held on September 19, to commemorate the 17th anniversary of the Batla House encounter in which a 21-year-old student of Jamia was killed by the Delhi Police.

The Jamia administration did not give any response to the notice issued by the Chief Proctor’s Office. The notice states that the scholar had been apprised about the sensitivity of the issue and the possible repercussions of such a gathering, especially inside the university campus, but he ignored the warnings.

The university administration alleged that the PhD scholar made a ‘provocative political speech’ in the central canteen on the campus before starting the march. He was also accused of putting up professionally designed and printed posters and distributing handbills at the central canteen of the university. He was also termed as a threat to the safety and security of the students, staff, and the university property.

Now, the PhD scholar has challenged the notice and asked the university to substantiate the allegations against him. “I entirely and completely deny this allegation and appeal to the Proctorial Board to present any audio or video proof of my speech on September 19, wherein my words have ignited religious sentiments”, he wrote.

The student rejected the claim of inciting students and blocking the traffic outside Gate no 7 of the university and alleged that the Chief Security Advisor even grabbed him and threw him outside the campus onto the Delhi Police.

He also argued that the gathering did not disrupt any academic activity, as the gathering was held after the classes.

Whereas, the All India Students’ Association (AISA) alleged that around 20 students, including women, were dragged from the campus and handed over to the Delhi Police during the September 19 protest.
