Kafi, An Acid Attack Survivor, Defies Odds To Top Class 12th, Aims To Join IAS

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced the class 10th and 12th board exam results on May 13, 2025. The result announcement brought relief and despair, both for the successful and those who could not pass the exam. Amid the mix of joy and disappointment, some tales emerge which reflect the determination of young students who carry courage to challenge the normal.

One such success is registered by 17-year-old Kafi, an acid attack survivor in Chandigarh, who topped her school in class 12th board exams with an impressive score of 95.6%. Kafi aspires to pursue political science honours and become an IAS officer.

Not only class 12th, Kafi had also topped class 10th after securing 95.2% marks in her CBSE board exams. Kafi, the daughter of a peon father and housemaker mother, showed through her determination to survive that disability is just a term.

Kafi was attacked by three neighbours in the village of Budhana in Hisar, Haryana, while she was just three years old. After the attack, Kafi lost her vision and survived burns on her face and arms. Despite this, the young girl did not give up on her dreams and worked hard to achieve success.

She relied on Braille and educational videos to study 5-6 hours daily, supported by her parents and teachers at the Institute for Blind in Chandigarh, where her family relocated for better educational opportunities after years of medical treatment across India.

Acid attacks in India, like the one Kafi endured, are addressed under IPC Section 326A with a minimum 10-year imprisonment, but NCRB data shows persistent challenges, with 150 cases in 2019 and a 54% conviction rate, highlighting the need for stricter enforcement and societal change.

This year overall pass percentage of class 10th remains at 93.66% while for class 12th the recorded pass percentage is 88.39%. In both class 10th and 12th girls have outperformed boys in terms of pass percentage.
