'Let’s Join Hands To Eradicate This Malady': M.K. Stalin Demands Scrapping Of NEET Exam

Amid the alleged scam and rumors surrounding the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) UG 2024 result Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin has reiterated his government’s stand over the decentralization of the entrance exam and the education system. Notably, the Tamil Nadu government has been demanding the scrapping of the NEET exam citing it as the reason behind the increasing number of suicide cases among medical aspirants.

Over the recent controversy of NEET UG- 2024 results, CM Stalin criticized the centralization process of the education system and pointed out the flaws in the exam process and the methodology used in calculating marks. Targeting the biggest medical exam in the country, he once again opposed it and said, “Trends emerging from the latest NEET results have once again vindicated our principled opposition to the exam. Issues such as question paper leaks, clustering of toppers at specific centers, and award of marks, which are mathematically impossible, under the guise of grace marks highlight the pitfalls of the current Union Government’s centralization.”

M.K. Stalin demanded the resotration of the examination conducted by the state governments and to increase their role in the selection procedure under the professional courses. Tamil Nadu CM said, “These events emphasise the need to restore the preeminence State governments’ and school education system’s role in determining criteria for professional course selection.”

He also reiterated his government stand against the NEET examination counduct and its centralisation by providing four reasons.  One of the reasons mentioned the examination as anti-poor and undermining the federal system. M.K. Staline said the NEET and other examinations are against the social justice and impact the  impact the availability of doctors in deserving areas.

TheTamil Nadu’ CM requested people to fight against the battle to scrap the central examiantions and said, “Let’s join hands to eradicate this malady. That day is not far!”

Recently the DMK”s mouthpiece “Murasoli”, in an editorial pointed out the loss of lives of students due to NEET in Tamil Nadu and other places and called the test “an alter” on which lives are lost.

In the past, Tamil Nadu assembly have passed the Admission to Undergraduate Medical Degree Course Bill, 2021 to exempt the state from the NEET exam, which did not get governor’s assent. Tamil Nadu has opposed the NEET exam since 2017 when it was made compulsory.
