The Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education selects 16 teachers in Higher Education Institutions for National Awards to Teachers (NAT) 2024. NAT is conferred on the teachers or faculty members who have done exemplary service to higher education institutions and polytechnics.
The 16 selected teachers are from polytechnics, state universities, and central higher education institutions. The teachers are selected through a two-step process; one is an evaluation by a preliminary search-cum screening committee for initial shortlisting of the nominee and the second through the committee Jury for selection of awardees from the shortlisted candidates.

National Education Policy 2020, recognizes that motivated, energized, and capable faculty is critical for the advancement of the students, institutions, and professions. It makes provision for incentives such as awards or other recognition to cultivate a culture of educational excellence in the education ecosystem.
Till 2023, the NAT was restricted to school teachers only, however in 2023, it was decided to institute two categories of awards for Higher Educational Institutes and Polytechnics under NAT.
Under these categories, category I is comprised of three subcategories –
- first sub-category includes engineering & technology, architecture;
- The second sub-category includes pure sciences including mathematics, physical sciences, biological sciences, chemical sciences, medicine, and pharmacy;
- and third sub-category involves arts and social sciences, humanities, languages, legal studies, commerce, and management.
While category II involves teachers of Polytechnic institutions.
Nomination for NAT is invited online mode via the Rashtriya Puraskar Portal and includes provision for self, institutional, and peer nomination as part of Jan Bhagidari.
