Delhi University’s St Stephen College has canceled its orientation program scheduled on August 28 at 10 am. The notification released from the principal of the college, John Varghese informed about the cancellation of the orientation program.

As per the notification issued by the principal, the orientation program scheduled to be held on August 28 has been canceled and regular classes will start on August 29. The students were asked to be seated in the college hall at 9 am for the morning assembly.

However, the notification released by the college authorities did not mention the reason behind canceling the orientation program. However, the cancellation order of the orientation program came amid the controversy of students who were not granted admission to undergraduate courses under the ‘single girl child’ quota.

Notably, Delhi University reserves a certain percentage of seats under the supernumerary quota in all of its colleges. The quota has different categories including children/widows of Personnel of the Armed Forces (CW), Single girl children, and ECA and sports. Through the Single girl child quota, which started in the 2024-25 academic sessions, one seat in each undergraduate and postgraduate program will be reserved for single girl students.

Under the supernumerary quota nearly 22 students applied to the college and out which nearly 12 applicants were under the single girl child quota. The college did not accept their applications. Reportedly, the college informed the university that its seats were full.

On Friday, the Delhi High Court ordered St Stephen’s college to give provisional admission to the courses in the college as per DU’s allocation after 6 students moved to the Delhi High Court.

As per the DU’s allocation under the quota, Stephen’s college has to set aside 19 such students. As per the reports, this year the versity had instructured all colleges to admit extra students for optimal filling of seats. The college had already lodged protest by writing a letter to the university against this.
