Banaras Hindu University Starts Student Counselling Initiative At Its Campus

Banaras Hindu University (BHU) has started a new student counseling initiative to support students at its campus. Under this program, the university will assist students in identifying their strengths, overcoming obstacles, and setting on a path of success. The initiative by the University is in line with the National Education Policy 20220.

Under the counselling initiative, 15 counselors are assigned across various faculties. These 15 counselors are called Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan Fellows and have an educational background in psychology. These fellows were trained by the university and completed their education in psychology at the campus, the university said in an official statement.

The selected team of counselors will adopt counselling methods and creative approaches to engage with the students, foster positive change, and be change agents.

Originally, the program was introduced at Mahila Mahavidyalaya as a pilot project and has proven to be effective in helping students tackle life challenges and succeed academically and personally as well. Considering the success of the pilot program, now the BHU has expanded the program at the university level to support students from all the faculties.

Towards the implementation of this initiative, Vice Chancellor Prof Sudhir Kuma Jain inaugurated the state-of-the-art counselling cell on the 78th Independence Day. The newly established facility is named Pahal and will provide a platform for students to provide guidance, address concerns and receive professional counselling support. The counselling facility was established under the coordination of associate of dean of students Prof Nishat Afroz.
