NCERT Proposes Inclusion of Class 9 To 11 Marks In Class 12 Board Results

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has proposed a new evaluation model for Class 12 board exams, that may include class 9th and 11th marks, alongside an increased emphasis on vocational and skill-based training.

The report entitled, ‘Establishing Equivalence across Education Boards’ suggests the incorporation of the cumulative metrics of percentage distribution of marks. The report is submitted by PARAKH, a regulatory centre set up by the NCERT, to the Ministry of Education in July 2024. It advocates for a standardized assessment approach across all educational boards in India.

As per the report, the evaluation of class 12 will be split into formative and summative assessments. Formative assessments include self-reflection, student portfolios, teacher assessments, project execution, and group discussions. And the summative assessment will include traditional term-end examinations.

Additionally, the new performance metrics will include 15% marks from class 9, 20% marks from class 10, 25% marks from class 11, and the remaining 40% from class 12 board exam performance.  The distribution of marks across the classes has also been discussed. The proposed distribution for

  • class 9 include 70% from formative assessment and 30% from summative assessment.
  • For class 10, it is 50-50 percent for both the assessment.
  • For class 11 it is 40:60 for formative and summative assessment.
  • For Class 12 it si 30:70 for formative and summative assessment respectively.

As per the report’s recommendation, vocational and skill-based subjects including Data Management, Coding, Application Development, Artificial Intelligence, Music, and Arts and Crafts should be made mandatory. The aim is to foster holistic learning as outlined in the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020).

It also emphasizes the need to assess teachers’ performance and improve school infrastructure to create a conducive learning environment such as the availability of potable water, a well-resourced library, and sports facilities.
