UGC May Remove The Name Of The College From The List Of Recognised Institutions: Minister

Answering the unstarred question in Lok Sabha, Minister of state of Education, Subhas Sarkar informed about the University Grant Commission (UGC) draft regulatory norms and authority regarding recognition of colleges.

The UGC has published the draft guidelines regarding recognition of colleges. The higher education regulator sought comments from the public on the new guidelines names as “UGC (Recognition of Colleges under Clause (f) of Section 2 of the UGC Act) Regulations, 2023”, Minister informed while responding regarding the query about UGC draft norm release and public comments on the new guidelines.

Another query was regarding if UGC may remove the name of the college from the list of recognised institutions on providing incorrect information by the applicant college. Minister Subhas Sarkar in response to this question said that UGC has the authority to remove the name of the college from the list of recognised institutions.

On asking about whether the responsibility of verification of the submitted documents lies with the university or not. Sarkar replied that draft regulations also provide the mention regarding this and says that the affiliating university is required to confirm the information in the application.

According to the draft guidelines, along with an assurance that the institution conforms with all UGC Act requirements, a college should provide documentation pertaining to its year of creation, an affiliation certificate from the university, and clearance from the statutory or regulating agency. The Ministry of Education should also send the UGC an official notification regarding the All India Higher Education Survey code.
