UGC To Include Ayurveda Biology In National Eligibility Test In December 2024

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has included Ayurveda Biology as an additional subject in the UGC-National Eligibility Test, in the December 2024 cycle. The decision was taken during the UGC’s 581st meeting, held on June 25, 2024, following the recommendations of an expert committee.

The decision to include Ayurveda Biology aligns with the UGC’s objective of incorporating traditional Indian knowledge into higher education. The decision will encourage more students to pursue studies in Ayurveda and the related fields, to enhance research and innovation. The syllabus for the newly added subject is available on the UGC-NET website.

As per the official notice, “Based on the expert committee’s recommendations, the Commission, in its 581st meeting held on 25th June 2024, has decided to add Ayurveda Biology as an additional subject from December 2024 onwards to the existing list of subjects of UGC-NET”.

The UGC chairman prof Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar said that after completing the 5 year integrated BSc-MSc program, these candidates can sit for the UGC-NET exam and pursue a PhD. Students who are trying to understand the ancient medical system from the perspective of modern molecular biology will be able to find new solutions to make medicines and medical systems more approachable to people, he added.

The application window for the December 2024 is not opened yet. The UGC-NET exam assesses the eligibility of the candidates for Assistant Professor as well as Junior Research Fellowship and Assistant Professor positions in Indian universities and colleges. The UGC-NET is conducted by the NTA in computer-based format.
