The Uttar Pradesh government announced to provide financial support to Atul Kumar, a Dalit Student who recently got admission into IIT Dhanabad after the Supreme Court’s intervention. The UP social welfare department will bear the entire fee of the Muzaffarnagar student.
The official statement said, “Under the state’s scholarship scheme, the Social Welfare Department will bear the entire fee of IIT through scholarship so that Atul’s education can be ensured”.
Atul Kumar, the son of daily wage laborer Rajendra Kumar could not secure admission in IIT due to non-payment of fees just by few minutes. Atul who was allotted a seat at IIT Dhanbad could not arrange the fee on time by June 24 and his admission was cancelled.

The Titoda Village, Muzaffarnagar resident, Atul approached the Supreme Court, which provided relief to the student by using its power under ‘Article 142’. The court directed the creation of a supernumerary post for Atul’s admission so that the admission of other students would not be disturbed.
Reportedly, the Chief Minister Yogi Aditynath government decided to provide full help to the student and gave instructions to ensure all the possible assistance to the student. The Social Welfare Minister Asim Arun spoke to the student’s family and assured them for the full support. As per the reports, the state government also contacted IIT Dhanbad and take necessary steps to compete the admission process.
