BJP fielded Ashok Purkait in Mathurapur Lok Sabha Constituency. Bapi Halder and Sarat Chandra Halder received the TMC and CPI (M) tickets respectively in the Mathurapur Lok Sabha Constituency.

The 41-year-old BJP candidate is a graduate and teacher by profession. Purkait has one case filed against him. Ashok Purkait started his election journey by offering flowers at Keshbeshwar Shiva Temple. While targeting the TMC candidates he advised them to step out of cars and walk while meeting people as this will help in reducing the fat accumulated in corruption money.

Recently, Mahturapur candidate Ashok Kandari has given X-category security based on the Intelligence Bureau (IB) reports finding a risk to his lives. Rekha patra with other 5 BJP candidates were given the X-category security.

Mathurapur Lok Sabha constituency consists of Patharpratima, Kakdwip, Sagar, Kulp, Raidighi, Mandirbazar, and Magrahat Paschim. All of the assembly seats are won by the TMC candidates.

The Mathurapur Lok Sabha Constituency had been a CPI stronghold for decades before the TMC came into power here in 2009.

In the last general elections, Choudhury Mohan Jatua of Trinamool Congress secured 51.84% votes to win the seat. While BJP candidate Shyama Prasad Halder secured 37.29 percent votes. The INC candidate Krittibas Sardar recieved only 2.31 percent of the mandate. The total voter turnout in the last Lok Sabha election in the constituency was 84.86%.

Mathurapur Lok Sabha Constituency is a SC category parliament seat with a literacy rate of 67.77%. The constituency has a significant population of SCs and Muslims. The SC, ST and Muslim candidates constitutes 30.2%, 1.2% and 35.57% of the total population of the Mathurapur Lok Sabha Constituency.
