The sitting MP of Bihar”s Maharajganj constituency, Janardan Singh Sigriwal, filed nomination seeking yet another term on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket for the 2024 Lok Sabha election. This is the third consecutive time Sigriwal is contesting from the Maharajganj Lok Sabha constituency. BJP is confident that Sigriwal will win the seat this year as well.

Janardan Singh Sigriwal started off his electoral journey by winning the assembly seat in 2000. He got elected as a MLA in Jalalpur assembly segment. He served as legislator from 2000 to 2010. In 2010, he was elected as the MLA of the Chapra legislative assembly. He served the constituency from 2010 to 2014.

Sigriwal also served as the Minister of Labour Resources from 2010 to 2013 and Minister of Art, Culture, and Youth Affairs from 2005 to 2008, in the Nitish Kumar cabinet, while JDU (Janata Dal United) was in alliance with BJP. He was removed from the ministerial responsibilities when JDU broke alliance with BJP.

Maharajganj is one among the 40 Lok Sabha seats of Bihar. It is an unreserved seat. In the 2019 Lok Sabha election, Sigriwal contested against Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) candidate Randhir Kumar Singh and clinched victory by a margin of 2,30,772 votes. In 2014 Lok Sabha election also, it was a battle between RJD and BJP. Sigriwal contested against RJD”s Prabhu Nath Singh. In 2014, Sigriwal secured victory by gaining a margin of 38,415 votes.

In the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, the battle, however, is not between RJD and BJP, but between BJP and the Congress. The grand old party has fielded Vijay Shanker Dubey, hoping to win back their old bastion. Meanwhile, Sigriwal hopes that he will be able to win with greater vote margins in this election.
