BJP MP Jagannath Sarkar To Contest From Ranaghat

Jagannath Sarkar is the sitting Member of Parliament elected in 2019 in the Lok Sabha from the BJP ticket from Ranaghat constituency. The BJP has chosen him again to run for the second time for 2024 Parliamentary elections.

During his term in the 17th Lok Sabha, Jagannath Sarkar has actively participated in the house activities and registered his presence in important matters. As per the information on PRS, Sarkar has attended the lower house with 89 percent presence. He participated in a total of 7 debates during his tenure in the Lok Sabha on matters of Churni River development, tourism, textile industry, cattle protection, and implementation of NRC in West Bengal. During his first term in the lower house, Sarkar asked a total of 99 questions to different ministries and departments.

In 2018, Jagannath Sarkar won the Shantipur constituency in the assembly elections. The BJP MP has a graduation degree and a B.Ed. Degree in Physical Education from Calcutta University, Kalyani University. He has 4 criminal cases registered in his name. His name came in the FIR registered against BJP MP and MLAs in the alleged recruitment irregularities at AIIMS, Kalyani.

Ranaghat constituency is in Nadia district with a seat reserved for SC candidates. In 6 out of 7 constituencies in Nadia BJP candidates have won assembly elections in 2021. In 2009 and 2014, the constituency was represented by TMC candidates.  In 2014, BJP won only around 17 percent votes however in the 2019 general elections BJP won with more than 52 percent of votes in the constituency. As per the information, the literacy rate in Ranaghat is 67.35 percent and SC voters are around 36.3 percent. Rural voters are 59% and urban 41%. As per the reports, Sarkar has been very active in the rural developmental activities in his constituency.

As soon his name was listed in the BJP”s first candidates list for WB posters fell in his name with slogans, ‘Corrupt, characterless, Jaga Chakao Nadia Bachao”, “I don”t accept the incompetent Immoral Jaga’ on it. Reportedly, Jagannath Sarkar was also been attacked by a bomb thrown on his car while he was returning after seeing the movie “The Kashmir Files”. In both these cases BJP and Sarkar insinuate the involvement of Trinamool Congress (TMC). On the eve of the by-election, BJP MP Jagannath Sarkar also faced controversy by worshiping weapons in Durga Puja at home.

He had been vocal against the opposition and said the INDIA alliance was an anti-nationalist party. Targeting the TMC CM Mamta Banerjee, he demanded an agency be set up by the Supreme Court in her alleged involvement in the riots in the state during her tenure.
