Congress Polled More Than AAP’s Losing Margin in All These Seats
As the results of the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections unfold, a key observation has emerged—Congress secured more votes than AAP’s losing margin in multiple constituencies. This has fuelled speculation that had the INDIA alliance partners, AAP and Congress, contested together, the results could have been drastically different.
With the Election Commission declaring results for 69 out of 70 seats, the BJP has already secured 47 victories, while AAP has won 22. The BJP is leading in seven other seats, with AAP ahead in one. Many analysts argue that the AAP’s defeat came with Congress cutting into its vote share, which significantly affected the final tally.
A close look at the data from the 41 seats won by the BJP reveals that in several constituencies, the margin by which AAP lost was smaller than the number of votes Congress secured. For example, in Sangam Vihar, AAP lost by just 344 votes, while Congress polled 15,863 votes. Similarly, in Mustafabad, AAP’s losing margin was 17,578, whereas Congress secured 33,474 votes. Other notable instances include Nangloi Jat, where AAP lost by 26,251 votes and Congress polled 32,028, and Malviya Nagar, where AAP’s margin of defeat was 2,131 votes, while Congress received 6,770 votes.
These figures strengthen the argument that a united INDIA alliance could have posed a formidable challenge to the BJP and possibly even changed the outcome in Delhi. However, past election trends show that Congress and AAP have struggled to align electorally. In the previous Lok Sabha elections, despite contesting together, the alliance failed to make an impact, with the BJP sweeping all seven parliamentary seats in Delhi.
