The newly constituted Congress Working Committee (CWS) to hold its first meeting today in Hyderabad, capital of Telangana. It is a clear Congress attempt to boost the party”s election campaign in the poll-bound state and send a message to ruling BRS (Bharat Rashtra Samithi) and rival BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) of Telangana.
- The three-day meeting will finalise the strategy for the upcoming assembly elections in five states – Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Mizoram. The states will go to polls later this year.
- The meeting will be presided by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. Senior leaders including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and other CWC members will also be there.
- It is the first meeting of the reconstituted Congress Working Committee which made alterations last month.
- Major focus is the poll-bound Telangana, as it is a crucial test for the INDIA alliance before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
- In the upcoming poll, Congress is to take part a triangle contest along with BJP and the ruling BRS in Telangana.
- “Bharat Jodo Yatra 2”, a sequel of Rahul Gandhi-led walk by the Indian National Congress members from Kanyakumari (Southern tip of India) to the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir (Northern tip of India), is also expected to be a part of discussions. The second edition of Bharat Jodo Yatra (Unite India March), from east to west is likely to happen before the 2024 general election.
- CWC will meet at 2.30 pm on Saturday, as announced by general secretary KC Venugopal, to form election strategies for the upcoming assembly and Lok Sabha polls.
- On Sunday, there will be a meeting of the extended CWC where all party chiefs and CLP leaders, besides Parliamentary Party office bearers, Central Election Committee members are invited.
- On Monday September 17, celebrated as the Telangana National Integration Day, the party will hold a mega rally in Hyderabad
- It is in the rally, Congress has promised to announce it”s six pre-poll guarantees to the people of the state.
What is a Congress Working Committee (CWC)
- It is the executive committee of the Indian National Congress, formed in December 1920 at Nagpur session of INC.
- Composed of senior party leaders.
- Highest Decision-making body of the party. Responsible for taking decisions on important policy and organizational matters.
- Directs party activities and campaigns at the national level.
- Headed by the party president, who is elected by the members of the All India Congress Committee (AICC).
- The current committee was formed on August 20, 10 months after Mallikarjun Kharge became the party chief.
- Now it has 39 regular members, 32 permanent invitees and 13 special invitees. These includes 15 women and several new faces such as Sachin Pilot and Gaurav Gogoi who are among the regular members.
