The BJP candidate Harvinder Kalyan secured a third term in the Gharaunda seat as he secured with 87,236 votes with a margin of 4,531 votes. Congress candidate Varinder Singh Rathore came in second with 82,705 votes.
Kalyan first contested the assembly elections from Gharaunda in 2009 under the banner of the BSP but came in third with 29,232 votes. In the 2014 elections, he won the seat with an impressive 55,247 votes while INLD candidate Narender Sangwan came in second with only 37,364 votes. Kalyan contested the elections as the BJP candidate.
In the subsequent assembly elections as well, Kalyan won a second-term as the MLA from the Gharaunda seat with 67,209 votes.
Gharaunda is one of the nine seats in the Karnal Lok Sabha constituency.
