Murshidabad has a large share of the Muslim population which is more than 66% of the total population. It”s educational backwardness and poor female literacy rate is a matter of concern. Currently, the constituency is represented by Abu Taher Khan of TMC. Now BJP gave a ticket to Gouri Shankar Ghost from Murshidabad, which is set to do background check on the level of acceptance of the BJP and its policies among the minority population.

Gouri Shankar Ghosh is a BJP MLA in the West Bengal Assembly from Murshidabad. The 8-year-old MLA is a Post Graduate in Political Science from Rabindra Bharati University. He defeated Shaoni Singha Roy of All India Trinamool Congress by a margin of 2491 votes in last West Bengal Assembly elections.

As per Amar Ujala, Ghosh has 9 criminal charges against his name. Notably, in 2022 by-elections, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lost seats in Asansol and Ballygunge, which MP Saumitra Khan blamed the ‘inexperienced’ state leadership for the party’s loss. One day after that, Gouri Shankar Ghosh resigned from the post of the district committee secretary citing differences with the party’s West Bengal leadership.

The seven assembly segments of Bhagabangola, Raninagar, Murshidabad, Hariharpara, Domkal, Jalangi, and Karimpur make up the Murshidabad Lok Sabha constituency. Parts of the districts of Murshidabad and Nadia are included in this Lok Sabha seat. In this seat, 1722752 voters are registered, of which 882248 are male, and 840476 are female. The literacy rate is 63.88 percent.

In 2019, Abu Taher Khan won the Lok Sabha election and in 2014, a CPM member was elected from Murshidabad. In 2019 Lok Sabha election, BJP made remarkable gains in West Bengal scoring 18 seats from a low of 2 in 2014. The April and May 2024 elections for the 18th Lok Sabha present an interesting scenario to see whether BJP tally moves up further or goes down after TMC announced to contest from all 42 seats in West Bengal.
