The Bharatiya Janata Party has fielded Poonamben Maadam as its candidate in Jamnagar constituency. Known to be one of the most promising third-generation leaders of the saffron party, Poonamben was included in the first list of the BJP.
The first list announced by the party includes 195 candidates. In the 2014 election, Poonamben was elected from the Jamnagar constituency. She also served as the MLA after being elected from the Khambhalia Constituency of Jamnagar.
Born in 1974, Poonam hails from a politically prominent family. Her father, the late Hematbhai Rambhai was a well-known social worker and was elected as MLA four times from Khambhalia constituency by contesting the election as an independent candidate. Former Jamnagar Congress MP Vikram Maadam is Poonam’s distant uncle. She is married to former defense officer Parminder Mahajen.
Poonam’s grandfather Rambhai Maadam is a well-known social worker who was active in the Aahir community.
As for her educational qualifications, Poonam has completed a bachelor”s degree in Commerce from Gujarat University. She began her political career as a member of the Congress party but later joined BJP.
She won the 2014 election by contesting against her uncle Vikram Maadam. She won by securing 484,412 votes. In 2019, she was again reelected to the 17th Lok Sabha with a vote margin of 2,36,804 votes.
Poonamben recently hit the headlines after engaging in a verbal fight with party MLA Rivaba Jadeja at a public event. As the video of the incident went viral, Poonamben said it was merely a misunderstanding that led to the verbal spat. In the video, the BJP leaders were seen exchanging barbs over “the use of slippers” while paying tribute to the brave hearts.
