The Haryana assembly election 2024 in the Punahana constituency shows that the Congress’ Mohammed Ilyas won by 31,916 votes. The independent candidate Rahish Khan lost and secured 53,384 votes as per the Election Commission of India. The BJP candidate Mohd Aizaz Khan also lost to the congress candidate Mohammed Ilyas securing just 5,072 votes.
Chaudhary Mohammad Ilyas is a seasoned Indian politician from Haryana who was born on April 1, 1954, in Sultanpur-Punahana. His father Chaudhary Rahim Khan was a prominent politician who served as a Member of Parliament and Minister in the Haryana Government. Ilyas has followed in his father’s footsteps becoming a four-time Member of the Legislative Assembly and serving as Minister of State twice in the Haryana Government.
His political journey began in 1987 when he contested from the Nuh constituency under the Lok Dal banner but lost and then ran for the Indian National Congress in the 1989 by-election but was unsuccessful. However, he achieved his first electoral victory in 1991 serving as Minister of State for Power and Irrigation. He later secured the Ferozepur Jhirka seat in 2,000 as a candidate of the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and became Minister of State for Animal Husbandry.
After losing the 2005 and 2014 elections, Ilyas made a successful comeback in 2019 winning under the Indian National Congress. He also contested for the parliamentary seat of Faridabad in 2004 but lost to Avtar Singh Bhadana.
