"Hyderabad Will Soon Become Bagyanagar" : Yogi Adityanath

While addressing an election rally in Telangana, Yogi Adityanath, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh claimed that if BJP comes to power, “Hyderabad will again become Bhagyanagar”.

While speaking during a rally at Kumuram Bheem Asifabad district, he said, “Congress made Hyderabad what it is today, BJP will make Hyderabad Bhagyanagar again. Goddess Bhagyalaxmi is here and we are commited to naming the city after her. This will be our party’s gift for all the Ram Bhakths in Telangana”. Taking to his X (formerly twitter) page, the UP Chief Minister wrote, “Hyderabad will soon become Bagyanagar”.

This is not the first time the Uttar Pradesh chief minister is speaking about renaming Hyderabad. In 2020, while campaigning for the party during a municipal election, Mr. Adityanath said the Hyderabad should be called as Bhagyanagar attributing the name to the Bagyalaxmi temple.

The BJP leader went on said that the Muslim reservations in Telangana are an insult to the constitution made by B. R. Ambedkar and said that, “Dirty game of appeasement can be seen in Telangana now. We have seen in Telangana to what extent a government can go to divide the society when BRS government announces Muslim reservation”, as quoted by News18.

As Telangana is all set to refresh its assembly members, the issue about renaming the capital resurfaces again. Earlier, Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma also remarked about BJP renaming Hyderabad within 30 min of BJP coming to power.  Another BJP leader who commented about rechristening Hyderabad was, Raosaheb Danve, Union Minister of State for Railways. He said that there should be no objection in renaming Hyderabad into Bagyanagar.

The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister is notorious for renaming cities. He faced criticism for renaming several of cities across UP. He changed Faizabad as Ayodhya and Allahabad as prayagraj during a cabinet meeting that he chaired in 2018. Earlier this month, the Aligarh Municipal Corporation has passed a proposal to change the name Aligarh to Harigarh.
