National Conference candidate Sajad Shaheen is leading the election in Banihal against the INC candidate Vikar Rasool Wani with over 2500 votes. Banihal is one of the 90 constituencies of Jammu and Kashmir. It is also part of the Udhampur Lok Sabha constituency.
Vikar Rasool Wani of the Indian National Congress won the assembly elections here in 2008 and 2014. Earlier independent candidates and the National Conference have dominated the constituency.

In the last assembly election, voting took place for 87 seats here, while this time, voting was held for 90 seats. The number of Assembly seats in Jammu and Kashmir increased to 90 after the delimitation of constituencies carried out in 2022. This includes 47 seats in the Kashmir Valley and 43 seats in Jammu.
