The third and final phase of Assembly election was held in Jammu and Kashmir. On Tuesday, October 1, the remaining 40 assembly constituencies across seven districts went to the polls in the Union Territory. Polling started at 7 am.

As per the Election Commission of India update, a voter turnout of over 65.65% was recorded.

Around 39.14 lakh voters will decide the fate of 415 candidates which includes independents. The prominent candidates in the fray include Khursheed Ahmad Sheikh (AIP), Sajjad Gani Lone (People’s Conference),  Tara Chand (Congress), Raman Bhalla (Congress), Choudhary Lal Singh (Congress), and Devender Singh Rana (BJP).

Over 20,000 polling staff have been arranged for managing the electoral process. Among the 5,060 polling stations, 50 polling booths are exclusively managed by women, known as Pink Polling Stations, 43 polling stations by specially-abled persons and 40 polling stations by youths.

To ensure smooth exercise of voting, security has been beefed up wherein more than 400 companies of security forces have been deployed.

The highlight of the third phase was the participation of West Pakistani refugee communities. The Valmiki Samaj and Gorkha community who received voting rights after the abrogation of Article 370 exercised their voting rights today.

In the morning, PM Modi in his twitter post requested the “voters to come forward and cast their votes to make the festival of democracy a success.”

Meanwhile, urging people of Jammu and Kashmir to vote in large numbers, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi reminded that remember that this election is about their self-respect and rights. In a post on X, he wrote, “Remember, this election is about the self-respect of the State, it is about the rights of the people of the State.”
