Jyotirmay Singh Mahato To Contest In 2024 Elections With An Added Responsibility

Jyotirmay Singh Mahato is BJP’s sitting MP from Purulia, West Bengal. This time again Mahato secured his name in BJP’s first list of Candidates for the 18th Lok Sabha elections. As per the PRS India information, since 2019 his overall average attendance to the Parliament was 69%.

Being a representative of one of the most backward districts of West Bengal, Mahato comes with additional responsibility. Mahato participated in 3 debates in the house with special mention for ‘Request to spread a new railway line from Purulia to Jhargram’, ‘Request to govt to include the Kurmi caste in ST category’, and ‘Reconstruction of the pre-establishment dam & construct a new dam in Purnia, West Bengal.

During his tenure, Mahato asked 133 questions in the lower house to different areas including corporate affairs, labor and employment, health and family welfare, youth affairs and sports, social justice, and empowerment.

Mahato is also the State General Secretary of the West Bengal unit of BJP. The 38-year-old young politician has a Law Degree (LLB) from Raurkela Law College, Sambalpur University. He has two criminal cases filed against him. Mahato joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), in 2000. He later joined the BJP and fought the 2016 assembly polls, securing third position. In 2019, he got elected to Lok Sabha while serving as a BJP general secretary. Mahato was appointed a member of the parliamentary standing committee on personnel, public grievances, law, and justice in 2019. He is also a member of the committee on subordinate legislation and a consultative committee member of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

He is said to contribute to the consolidation of Dalit votes in favor of BJP in the Jangalmahal region which has been appreciated by central leadership.
