Serchhip, One Of The Long Standing Constituency Of Mizoram

Serchhip Legislative Assembly constituency is one among the 40 legislative Assembly constituencies of Mizoram. It has been a constituency since 1972, in which the first election of the state happened for electing members of 30 constituencies of the state. It is a Scheduled Tribe constituency.

Serchhip Assembly constituency of Mizoram has been creating hustles for the 2023 assembly election. The constituency holds a key place in this election as ZPM leader (ZPM is the incumbent party in Serchhip) and chief ministerial candidate Lalduhoma is competing from here. It is a part of Lok Sabha/Parliamentary constituency of Mizoram. The constituency comes under Serchhip district of Mizoram.

During the 2018 assembly election, Serchhip has marked a 91.10 percentage voter turnout as 15,502 of the 17,018 registered voters exercised their voting right, and Lalduhoma won. Zoram People’s Movement bagged a significant victory by bagging the seat in by-election held in 2021.

Due to the disqualification of Lalduhoma, who was in power and was an independent candidate representing Zoram National Party which he founded. During the 2018 election, his party joined the coalition party, Zoram People’s Movement. He was disqualified as the Member of Legislative Assembly on account of breaching of anti-defection law in 2020.

The constituency went under by-election in 2021. Lalduhoma again came to power in Serchhip, but this time by competing as a ZPM member and won with a massive 49.95 percentage votes. Mizo National Front followed Zoram People’s Movement in 2018 as Vanlalzawma won 32.13 percentage of vote. With the end of Lal Thanhawla era, Congress lose their grandeur in Serchhip. During the 2021 by-election, P. C. Laltlansanga, who represented Congress could only collect 15.73 percent votes.

Top candidates from Serchhip this year are, Lalduhoma of Zoram People’s Movement, J. Malsawmzuala Vanchhawng of Mizo National Front, R. Vanlaltluanga of Indian National Congress, K. Vanlalruati of BJP and two independent candidates namely Lalawmpuia Renthlei and Ramhlun Edena.
