Election Commission of India (ECI) revised the counting date counting date for Mizoram election to December 4. The counting of votes for Mizoram Assembly seats along with four other states – Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Telangana – was scheduled to be on December 3. ECI has been asked to shift the counting dates as Sunday is being considered a special day for the people of Mizoram.
“The Commission has received several representations from various quarters requesting for change in date of counting from 3rd December, 2023 (Sunday) to some other week day, on the ground that 3rd December, 2023 being Sunday a special significance for the people of Mizoram,” the poll body said in a statement.
“The Commission, having considered these representations, has decided to revise the date of counting for the General Election to the Legislative Assembly of Mizoram from 3rd December, 2023 (Sunday) to 4th December, 2023 (Monday),” ECI added.
The 40 assembly seats in Mizoram went to polling booth on November 7 in a single phase and recorded over 77% voter turnout. 8,52,088 voters in the northeastern state will decide the fate of 174 candidates which includes 18 women candidates as well. Since total constitute 40, 21 are needed for securing majority.
The Assembly polls witnessed a three-way between ruling Mizo National Front (MNF), Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), and Congress. For the assembly elections, MNF, ZPM and Congress fielded 40 candidates, and BJP and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) fielded 23 and 4 candidates respectively. At present, Zoramthanga-led MNF is ruling Mizoram and ZPM constitutes the opposition party.
As per the latest reports, in other four states the counting of the votes will take place on December 3 itself.
