40 assembly constituencies of Mizoram will go to booths on Tuesday ( November 7). Polling teams carrying EVMs have reached their respective polling stations on Monday. 8,52,088 voters will decide the destiny of 174 candidates in the northeastern state. 18 women candidates are contesting in this election.

Among the 1276 polling stations, 149 are remote ones, and the election commission spots 30 polling stations in the state as critical polling stations.

The election campaign for the state ended on Sunday, with no reports of any disruptions on law and order. The officials report that security arrangements have increased across Myanmar and along international borders with Bangladesh and Myanmar. Around 3,000 policemen and a large number of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) are deployed for the election purposes, officials added.

“Mizoram has a tradition of conducting the most peaceful elections in the country. We hope to maintain that,” Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Madhup Vyas told PTI.

In the election, Mizoram will witness three-way contest through ruling Mizo National Front (MNF), Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), and Congress.

In the 2018 Assembly elections, Mizo National Front (MNF) emerged victorious by securing 26 seats and gaining a vote share of 37.8 per cent. Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), which obtained 6 seats became the major opposition in the election, and Congress and BJP secured five and one seats respectively. Thus, MNF chief and former insurgent leader Zoramthanga became the Chief Minister of Mizoram.

For the 2023 Assembly elections, MNF, ZPM and Congress fielded 40 candidates, and BJP and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) fielded 23 and 4 candidates respectively.

The counting of the votes will take place on December 3.
