Baramati Lok Sabha constituency in Maharashtra is one of the keenly watched seats in the state as the most influential Pawar family is contesting each other. It is the first major battle taking place between the Pawar’s after the split.
Supriya Sule, a three-time Baramati MP and candidate of the senior faction is contesting against her sister-in-law and Ajit Pawar’s wife Sunetra Pawar. Supriya is a staunch advocate of social justice who is greatly inspired by the ideals of Indian reformers. The 54-year-old got her first lessons in politics from her father Sharad Pawar, a four-time Union minister and former leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha. Apart from Pawar, she has considered former prime minister and late socialist leader Chandra Shekhar an inspiration.
The one-term Rajya Sabha MP and three time Lok Sabha MP from the family seat of Baramati follows the footsteps laid by the Congress leader and former deputy prime minister, Yashwantrao Chavan, of 80 per cent social cause and 20 per cent politics.
Supriya by contesting in the family bastion, Baramati faces two challenges- resurrect the NCP (SP) faction after the split in the party engineered by Ajit Pawar who switched to the NDA camp.
Supriya is married to a businessman Sadanand Sule and is a mother of two children. Known for her well-grounded, accessible character, Supriya always stood out and these characters in her rated her to be one among the best parliamentarians.
Sule was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2006. She had led state level campaign against female foeticide. Under her leadership, the wing named Rashtravadi Yuvati Congress was also formed to give platform to young girls in politics.
