AAP national convener and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal made a huge announcement today regarding the upcoming Assembly elections in the national capital-state. “There will be no alliance in Delhi (for assembly elections),” Kejriwal said while responding to questions by media on possible INDIA alliance coalition, majorly with Congress, against the BJP.
In the Lok Sabha elections held in the summer, AAP and Congress had contested the elections in alliance against the BJP in all seven seats of Delhi and drew blank.
The recent attendance of AAP leaders, including Arvind Kejriwal, at the swearing-in ceremony of Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has fuelled speculation about a possible INDIA alliance coalition contesting against a resurgent BJP in Delhi.
The Delhi Assembly elections, expected early next year, will see the ruling AAP government facing a rising BJP, which has capitalised on issues such as corruption and air pollution. These challenges have placed the Atishi-led administration under scrutiny. Over the past five years, several AAP leaders, including former Chief Minister Kejriwal, his then deputy Manish Sisodia, and Satyender Jain, were arrested and spent time in jail over corruption allegations.
In 2020, AAP had won its third with a thumbing majority of 62 seats in total 70, five less than its previous tally in 2015. BJP had won eight seats in 2020 and three in 2015. Congress was completely routed out in both elections.
