Bypoll Results 2023: Congress Retains Puthuppally, INDIA Bloc Scores In Jarkhand

BJP and the Opposition has maintained the previous tally in the byelections held on September 5 and the results being declared today. The INDIA bloc partners have secured victory in Jharkhnd”s Dumri, West Bengal”s Dhupguri, Uttar Pradesh”s Ghosi and Kerala”s Puthuppally while the BJP has won Tripura, and Uttarakhand seats.

Boxanagar, Dhanpur (both Tripura) and Bageshwar (Uttarakhand). In Boxanagar, Tafajjal Hossain wrested the seat from CPM while in West Bengal”s Dhupguri ruling Trinamool defeated the incumbant BJP.

Congress, JMM and SP won in respective Kerala, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh seats.

The counting of votes for the seven assembly seats across six states began at 8.00 am at centres set up in the respective states on Friday.

The verdict is crucial since it is the first electoral contest between BJP-led NDA alliance and the Opposition bloc INDIA ahead of major Assembly polls in several states later this year. And it will also provide implications for the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Ghosi in Uttar Pradesh

Samajwadi Party”s Sudhakar Singh won Goshi after defeating BJP”s Dara Singh Chauhan. According to the Election Commission of India website, the voting is in the last round and only 2,593 votes to be counted. Mr Singh is leading with 42,759 votes now.

The Goshi assembly constituency became vacant after the former Samajwadi Party MLA Dara Singh joined the BJP last month.

Dumri in Jharkhand

Jharkhand Mukti Morcha”s (JMM) Bebi Devi retains Dumri seat left vacant by her husband upon his untimely death. She secured 100317 votes in total, 17153 more than rival All Jharkhand Students Union”s (AJSU) Yashoda Devi.

In Dumri, the by-poll was necessitated by the death of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha MLA and former state education minister Jagarnath Mahto. He had been representing the seat since 2004.

Dhanpur and Boxanagar in Tripura

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured victory in the by-elections for both the Dhanpur and Boxanagar assembly seats in Tripura”s Sepahijala district, as confirmed by the Election Commission (EC).

In the tribal dominated Dhanpur, Bharatiya Janata Party”s Bindu Debnath secured victory over CPIM”s (Communist Party of India (Marxist)) Kaushik Chanda. Bindu Debnath earned 30017 votes while Kaushik Chanda managed to get 11146 votes, 18871 less than the winner.

Union Minister Pratima Bhoumik”s resignation as the MLA of Dhanpur necessitated the by-electionin Dhanpur.

In Boxanagar, BJP”s Tafajjal Hossain won by 34146 votes, with a clear lead of 30237 of votes than his opponent from Communist Party of India (Marxist) Mizan Hossain. Mizan Hossain was able to secure only 3909 votes in total.

The byelection to the Boxanagar constituency was necessitated by the death of CPI(M) MLA Samsul Haque.

Puthuppally in Kerala

Opposition UDF candidate Chandy Oommen,Son of late Congress stalwart Oommen Chandy, secured a victory from the Puthuppally assembly bypoll. He secured 80144 votes and defeated major rival CPIM”s (Communist Party of India (Marxist)) Jaick C Thomas by 37719 votes. Mr Thomas managed to earn only 42425 votes.

The victory is a big blow to ruling CPI(M) led Left Democratic Front, since Chandy Oommen won by a record lead. He gained a clear edge in the first round itself and retained that position till the counting of votes was completed.

The by-election in Puthuppally was necessitated following the demise of former Chief Minister and MLA Oommen Chandy.

Bageshwar in Uttarakhand

BJP”s Parwati Dass wins Bageswar seat with 33247 in total. It is 2405 votes more than what INC”s (Indian National Congress) Basant Kumar earned. Basant Kumar earned an early lead but fell eventually.

The bypoll was held after the death of four-time MLA and cabinet minister Chandan Ram Das in April.

Dhupguri in West Bengal

TMC”s Nirmal Chandra Roy won the Dhupguri seat defeating BJP”s Tapasi Roy by 4309 votes. Nirmal Chandra Roy got 97613 votes while the later managed to secure only 93304 .

The bypoll was necessitated due to the death of BJP MLA Bishnu Pada Ray recently.
