Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin called the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrest of former Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren “outrageous and shameful!”.
Mr Soren, who is accused of an alleged land scam, was formally arrested after being taken to the ED office yesterday.
Before his arrest, Mr Soren submitted his resignation and senior leader of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) Champai Soren was announced as his successor. Currently, the INDIA alliance partners JMM, Congress, RJD and CPI (ML) L are in power with clear majority in 81 seats assembly.
“The arrest of Hon”ble Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren is a blatant display of political vendetta by Union BJP Govt. Using investigative agencies to harass a tribal leader is a new low. This act reeks of desperation and abuse of power. BJP”s dirty tactics won”t silence opposition voices,” Stalin wrote on X.

He added that “despite BJP”s vindictive politics, Hemant Soren stands strong, refusing to bow down”. The Tamil Nadu leader appreciated the resilience showcased by the former Jharkhand chief minister. “His resilience in the face of adversity is commendable. His determination to fight back against BJP”s bullying tactics is an inspiration,” the Tamil Nadu chief minister wrote on X.
Mr Soren tendered his resignation letter to governor CP Radhakrishnan at the Raj Bhavan after several hours of questioning by the ED officials. Hemant announced his resignation from the chief ministerial post yesterday. He has now approached the apex court challenging the arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The request submitted by the senior advocate Kapil Sibal was accepted by the Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud and agreed to hear the matter tomorrow.
The former chief minister has filed a complaint against the ED officials in which he stated that the central agency has carried out a purported search. “This purported search was without any notice to me nor was my presence required on January 29 in New Delhi by the named persons (ED officials),” Hemant Soren said. The party has also accused the BJP of trying to topple the government.
