The results of the Rajasthan state assembly elections will be announced today, December 3. The voting was held in Rajasthan in a single phase on November 25. Notably, 74.13 percent cast their ballots. While some of the exit polls predict a clear majority for the BJP, others predict a close battle between the ruling Congress and the opposition BJP. Apart from the BJP and Congress, smaller parties like the Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) are also deciding factors.
Since 1993, either the BJP or the Congress has never had the opportunity to rule Rajasthan consecutively. The Rajasthan Assembly consists of 200 constituencies, and parties need 101 seats to form a government in the desert state. It is to be noted that the voting took place only in 199 constituencies as the Election Commission adjourned the election in the Karanpur constituency in Rajasthan, following the death of Congress candidate Gurmeet Singh Koonar. A total of 1,875 candidates are contesting the Rajasthan election. Rajasthan has 52,788,931 eligible voters, and it includes 2.2 lakh new voters. Women voters in the state are also a crucial factor, as out of the total eligible voters, 25.3 lakh are women.
In the 2018 Assembly elections, Congress won 100 seats, and it was a significant victory as they got only 21 seats in 2013. However, Congress was one short of the majority and finally formed the government with the support of the BSP. Congress has also won five of the seven seats in assembly by-elections in the last five years. While the Ashok Gehlot-led outgoing government is struggling to retain power, the BJP”s campaigns are mainly focused on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Central government”s welfare schemes.
