The Indian National Congress (INC) candidate Vinod Kumar defeated the incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Dharmendra Kumar who had won the 2018 election in a narrow majority. However, Vinod Kumar managed to garner a good share this time, accounting for as large as 1,43,091 votes against BJP’s Dharmendra Kumar, who secured 87,818 votes.
Situated in Hanumangarh district, Pilibanga is one of the eight assembly segments constituting the Ganganagar Parliamentary Seat. The seat is reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates as the constituency”s demographic formation is dominated by SC voters, accounting for 33.59%, as per the 2011 Census. According to the 2011 Census, 81.26% of Pilibanga”s population is rural, with 18.75% of voters being urban, reflecting the divide between the two.
Dharmendra Kumar won the seat for the Bharatiya Janata Party in the 2018 assembly elections with a narrow margin of 278 votes. Kumar defeated Vinod Kumar of the Indian National Congress, who received 46.92% (106136 votes).
The 2018 victory marked the BJP”s second consecutive term in Pilibanga. Dropati secured the seat for the BJP in 2013, amassing 33% of the votes with a winning margin of 10,198 votes (5.27%).
However, going by the latest reports, out of the total 199 seats in the state, the BJP wrested power from the Congress with a clear majority and emerged victorious in the state. The BJP won a majority with 115 seats and the Congress came second, securing 69 seats. Along with Rajasthan, the Assembly elections were held in four other states including Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Chhattisgarh and Mizoram. Results of these states are also announced, with BJP becoming victorious in three states – Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, and Congress taking Telangana.
