New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Atishi on Sunday wrote a formal letter Union Home Minister Amit Shah, expressing concerns over the resettlement of Rohingyas in the national capital. She accused the BJP-led Central government of settling “a large number of illegal Rohingya” in different parts of national capital without informing the Delhi government.
Atishi referred a 2022 social media post by Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, who had mentioned the shifting of Rohingya refugees to EWS flats in the city’s Bakkarwala area.

“From the post of Puri, it seems they were settled into Economically Backward Class flats of Bakkarwala. These flats were meant for the poor people of Delhi. It appears the rights and facilities meant for the people of Delhi are being given away to migrants,” the letter read.

Continuing further, Atishi states that this denote it is a “conscious decision and policy” of the BJP government to settle the Rohingya refugees in India.
In response to Atishi’s claims, Puri took to X and wrote, “Aam Aadmi Party continues with its politics of diversion, false narratives and half truths. Facts and actual position on illegal Rohingya migrants were immediately clarified through a tweet on the same day which they selectively chose to ignore, and continue to do so.”

Further, Minister added: “No Rohingya migrant has been given a govt house in Delhi. Infact, contrary to the drummed up AAP rhetoric they are actually the ones who play host to the illegal Rohingyas in Delhi, have settled them in large numbers, give them electricity and water, and even pay them ₹10,000.”

New Delhi BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj slammed Atishi for misleading citizens on sensitive issues like Rohingya crisis to hide the failures of the AAP government. “No Rohingya illegal migrant in Delhi has been allotted an EWS house. If, as Chief Minister, she is unaware of these facts, it is a matter of serious concern. And if she is aware, I appeal to her to stop spreading misinformation and creating divisions” the Indian Express quotes, as Swaraj is saying.
As the Delhi elections are due in February, the issue of Rohingya immigrants has gained importance. Last week, following L-G order, Delhi Police launched a special drive to identify and take strict action against illegal Bangladeshi immigrants residing in the national capital.
