AAP Accuses BJP Of Resettling Rohingyas In Capital, Snatching Rights Of Delhiites

New Delhi: As the assembly election nears in the national capital, political rivalry has been intensifying among parties vying for power. After the Aam Admi Party (AAP) alleged voters’ name deletion from the electoral roll, the BJP took out the illegal residents and infiltrations issue card. As the debate goes on, Delhi Chief Minister Atishi today wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, flagging concerns over the resettlement of Rohingyas in the capital city.

The letter, sent to the Home Minister, claimed that the Central Government settled a large number of illegal Rohingya refugees in Delhi without any information, while the Delhi Government and the public were kept completely ignorant of the matter. The chief minister cited tweets of Union Minister Hardeep S. Puri saying that it made clear how the BJP-ruled Central Government “deliberately settled the Rohingyas in Delhi and snatched the rights of the people of Delhi by settling the Rohingya refugees in the EWS flats of Bakkarwala, which were meant for the poor of Delhi.”

In a social media post in 2022, housing minister Hardeep Puri had said that Rohingya refugees would be shifted to apartments in Bakkarwala in outer Delhi and would also be provided basic amenities and police protection, though the Home Ministry later issued a press release saying it had not given any directions to provide flats to Rohingya Muslims in Delhi. The release had also asked the then Arvind Kejriwal government to ensure the illegal foreigners remained at their present location.

The Delhi chief minister, in her social media post, added that the Union Government’s move will not only affect the law and order of Delhi but will also increase the pressure on the city’s limited resources, underlining that no illegal refugee should be settled in Delhi without the permission of the Delhi government and the public. The AAP leader also demanded the list and addresses of all Rohingya refugees settled by the Central Government be given to the Delhi Government, Lieutenant Governor, and Delhi Police.

After Kejriwal raised the removal of voters’ names from the list, producing some citizens as evidence, the state BJP chief alleged that the AAP supremo was protecting illegal Bangladeshi and Rohingya infiltrators. However, resharing the Delhi chief minister’s post on his X handle, Kejriwal asked, “Who brought Rohingyas to Delhi? Why is the BJP government settling them in Delhi? Why is the BJP government snatching the rights and facilities of the people of Delhi and giving them to them?”

Notably, as the AAP chief minister cited his 2022 tweet, Hardeep Puri reacted, saying that the AAP was continuing with its “politics of diversion, false narratives, and half-truths.” The minister in a post today said that facts and actual positions on illegal Rohingya migrants were immediately clarified through a tweet on the same day, adding that it was selectively ignored. Stating that no Rohingya migrant has been given a government house in Delhi, the minister claimed that AAP was actually the one who played host to the illegal Rohingyas in Delhi, had settled them in large numbers, gave them electricity and water, and even paid them Rs10,000.

“It will also help if they state their position on the scams that landed them in jail, Sheesh Mahal, their refusal to pay the state share in RRTS and Phase-4 of Delhi Metro in order to stall the projects, and the delay caused to the PM-UDAY Scheme till we went ahead on our own with it to offer ownership rights to people living in hitherto unauthorised colonies of Delhi,” the minister wrote, adding that he would also like to remind the ruling party in Delhi about several other infrastructure projects for which the Delhi government did not pay its share but which were eventually completed by the Centre bearing the entire cost.

However, sharing the Union Minister’s post about his 2022 remarks, AAP leader Manish Sisodia said he wished to state the “blabbering” in the minister’s tweet which indicated, “चोर चोरी करते रंगे हाथों पकड़ा गया। (The thief was caught red-handed while stealing.)”

Earlier today, the AAP released the final list of candidates for the upcoming assembly elections, with former Delhi chief minister Kejriwal set to contest from New Delhi, daring the rival BJP in the national capital.
