The Sonipat assembly constituency has witnessed a to and fro of power between the BJP and Congress over the years. Once again, the people have switched their preference from Congress to the BJP. Nikhil Madaan, the saffron party candidate, won the seat with 84,827 votes.
Madaan defeated incumbent MLA Surendra Panwar who won 55,200 votes. The winning margin is an impressive 29,627 votes. Aam Aadmi Party candidate Devinder Gautam only managed to win 1,200 votes.
The BJP candidate Kavita Jain won the seat in 2009 defeating Congress’ Anil Kumar Thakkar by a margin of 2,657. In the 2014 elections, she secured a second term defeating Congress candidate Dev Raj Diwan by a margin of 25,810 (20.8 percent) of the total votes cast for the seat. The BJP had a vote share of 45.79% in 2014 in this seat.
Congress regained the seat in 2019 when Surender Panwar won with 79,438 seats. Jain came in second with only 46,560 votes.
