Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), after a week long deliberations, has decided to appoint its tribal leader Vishnu Sai Deo as the next chief minister of Chhattisgarh. The decision was taken at the Chhattisgarh Legislative Party meeting today. Vishnu Deo will be the first tribal chief minister of Chhattisgarh.

This has brought to an end to the suspense as BJP had been in huddle over the chief ministerial name since its victory. Vishnu Deo Sai”s name was being counted among the frontrunners, along with former chief minister Raman Singh. The announcement was made after the key meeting of the BJP”s newly elected 54 MLA”s in the state was held in Raipur.

After being chosen as the Chhattisgarh“s CM, Vishnu Deo Sai said he will fulfill the promises made by the BJP to the people under “Modi ki guarantee”. The BJP”s poll manifesto released ahead of the election was titled “Modi ki Guarantee 2023”. Meanwhile, BJP contested election without declaring any CM face. BJP won securing 54 seats out of total 90 seats refuting exit poll which predicted a tough fight with the Congress.

In the Chhattisgarh assembly election, Sai won from the Kunkuri Tribal Seat with a margin over 25000 votes. On Sunday, former chief minister Bhupesh Baghel congratulated Vishnu Deo on being chosen as the new chief minister. He wrote on X, “I wish that you take forward the journey of justice and progress of Chhattisgarh as the Chief Minister”.

Vishnu started his political career as a panchayat leader and he had been the state President of the BJP between 2020 to 2022. He was the Union minister for steel in Prime Minister”s Narendra Modi”s first term of governance. After the formation of the Congress government in 2018, Vishnu Deo got appointed as the party”s state unit chief. He was later replaced by Arun Sao.

By choosing Vishnu Deo as the chief minister, the BJP eyes sizable tribal votes in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
