Congress candidate and wrestler Vinesh Phogat filed her nomination from Haryana’s Juliana Assembly Constituency for the state assembly elections today.
After filing her nomination, the gold medalist who recently joined the Congress party said it is a matter of good fortune for her that she is entering politics. “We are working hard for the welfare of every section. I am grateful for the love the people of Jualana are giving me,” news agency ANI quoted the Congress candidate.

After Congress named her as its candidate, Phogat said she expected to win each battle with the blessings of the people. She said her loved ones have been supporting her, and they have supported her during her protest against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh over sexual harassment charges. “With their blessings, we will win all battles in life,” she said on Sunday, kicking off her election campaign.
The BJP has fielded former army man Captain Yogesh Bairagi against the wrestler, inviting national attention to the Julana seat ahead of the Haryana polls. The JJP, a former ally of the BJP, has retained the same legislator by chance despite facing existential threats amid high-profile candidates. The party has lost a considerable share of votes in the recently held Lok Sabha elections after the BJP decided to break its alliance, reducing the regional party’s relevance in the state.

However, the battle is expected to be fiery, with two influential figures competing against each other under dominated parties. The entry of Phogat has enhanced the Congress’ prospects, as the wrestler comes from the dominant Jat community, whose anger against the BJP prevails due to the alleged negligence towards the farmer’s demand for Minimum Support Price (MSP). The collapse of the Congress-AAP alliance, perhaps benefits the saffron party, as the Arvind Kejriwal-led party has been releasing its candidates after failing to reach a deal with the grand old party.
