Sunil Soren, a 52 year-old Indian politician from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has a strong track record in Jharkhand politics. He is born to late Sufal Soren and Paku Marandi. Sunil completed his intermediate education from A.M. College, Dumka, in 1992.
Sunil Soren’s political journey began when he won the Jama assembly seat in 2005 defeating JMM candidate Durga Soren by a margin of 6630 votes. He later contested and won the 17th Lok Sabha elections from Dumka in 2019, defeating JMM heavyweight Shibu Soren, who had held the seat for four consecutive terms.
However, Sunil did not participate in the 2024 parliamentary elections and the seat was won by Nalin Soren of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM).
In the upcoming Jharkhand Assembly elections Sunil Soren will contest from the Dumka Assembly constituency as a BJP candidate. He will face competition from Hemant Soren’s younger brother and minister Basant Soren who is contesting from the same constituency. The BJP is contesting 68 of the 81 assembly seats in the state leaving the rest for its allies.

Sunil Soren’s switch from JMM to BJP may impact his chances as some long-serving BJP leaders feel alienated due to favouritism towards turncoats. Dumka Lok Sabha constituency is a key parliamentary area in Jharkhand, eastern India reserved for candidates from Scheduled Tribes. It covers the entire Jamtara district and parts of Dumka and Deoghar districts. This constituency is one of 14 in Jharkhand representing a significant voice in the Indian parliament.
Polling for the 81-member assembly will take place in two phases: on November 13 and November 20 with votes being counted on November 23.
Will Sunil Soren’s experience and track record be enough to secure a win for the BJP in Dumka? Only time will tell.
