The iconic romantic film of director Gautham Vasudev Menon, Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa (VTV), reached its milestone of 15 years. It’s time to relive the moments of the film that aesthetically depict the concept of love, passion and life without much complicating elements. Let’s revisit the iconic duo of Karthik (Simbu) and Jessie (Trisha), who wrote a new grammar for love.

The aesthetic love story of Karthik and Jessie

This romantic film directed by GVM explores the complicated relationship between a Hindu Tamil man and a Christian Malayali woman, combining the concepts of love, passion, destiny, and uncertainties.

The characters Karthik and Jessy sketched by GVM hold a special place in Tamil cinema. Karthik, in his clean and trimmed appearance with the nuanced touch of an English accent, represented the youngsters of the 2010 era. Jessie in her flowy sarees with her soft-spoken attitude just won the hearts of the audience. The dialogue of the film still echoes in the minds of the audience even after ages.

The Iconic Duo: Simbu and Trisha

Trisha and Silambarasan had previously worked together in Alai (2003), a romantic comedy helmed by Vikram Kumar. The film didn’t open to great reviews. However, Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya made them an onscreen couple to remember. Their chemistry was so magical in the film that Gautham Menon later made a short film on the characters during the pandemic-induced lockdown.

The soundtracks with lyrics written by Thamarai and music composed by AR Rahman offered a fresh and refreshing album, with the lyrics deeply resonating with the audience.

Every song of the album, like Omana Penne, Anbil Avan, Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya, Hosanna, Aaromale, and others, etched a special place in the audience’s hearts.

VTV: Sill being Screened in Theatres

Can you believe that VTV has run for over 1,000 days in cinemas and is still being screened? Altering its box office records every year, it has been re-released every year in theatres to coincide with Valentine’s Day. The film completed its 1,000 days of screening at PVR Cinemas in Chennai on February 26.

Mahesh Babu: The Initial Choice for VTV

The first choice of GVM for VTV was Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu. Since Mahesh Babu refused to do the film, Gautham Menon started looking at other options and eventually zeroed in on Silambarasan. The actor underwent a major makeover for his role as Karthik, the assistant film director.

The two parallel worlds of VTV

GVM also simultaneously shot the film in Telugu titled Ye Maaya Chesave with Naga Chaitanya and Samantha in the lead. Creating a parallel connection between both films, Trisha and Silambarasan played a cameo in Ye Maaya Chesave, just like how Naga Chaitanya and Samantha portrayed the roles in VTV.
