This November 14 marks a special day for cinema lovers, especially for Suriya fans, not just because of the release of Kanguva but for another reason. Let’s go back in time to recollect the nostalgic memory. 16 years back, this day witnessed the magic of the director Gautham Vasudev Menon, which just mesmerized the audience with the masterful representation of different phases of life.

Yes, Vaaranam Aayiram, the classic of the duo Suriya and Gautham Vasudev Menon, turns 16 today.

Varanam Aayiram is not just a film but an amalgamation of phases of life that might resonate with yours as well. It combines the energetic teenage years, the adventurous college life, the responsibilities of life, the discovery of oneself, and other magical touches of the director. The title of the film Varanam Aayiram itself has its own story, which translates to Thousand Elephants, and is one of the sentence from the Tamil literature, Songs Of Aandaal.

Commemorating the 16th year anniversary, the legendary director shared some of the glimpses of the making of the film and wrote, “A film that will forever be etched in me. #VaaranamAayiram is all of my soul and like nothing else…”

Interestingly, the film is inspired by Gautham Menon’s life and revolves around a military officer who learns about his father’s death, and on his way back home, recollects the time he spent with his father. The film takes the genre of romantic drama, exploring the father and son bond along with their respective love lives.

The cult classic of the Kanguva actor also stars Simran, Sameera Reddy, and Ramya as the female leads. The 2008 film became a commercial success on its release and eventually became the biggest hit in Suriya’s career of the time. It also won a number of awards, including the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil.

The album of the film, which includes Adiye Kolluthe, Yethi Yethi Yeththi, and more, composed by Harris Jayaraj, also has its own fanbase, and he also received the best music director award as well. Upon its release, Vaaranam Aayiram became the most downloaded Tamil album and was listed among the top 20 digital downloads. It is considered to be the most played and repeated soundtrack in music streaming platforms to date, a record for a Tamil album.
