“Chinky” Isn’t Just a Rap. It’s A Roar From The Northeast That Demands To Be Heard.
Even though we live in a country as diverse as India, racism still runs deep, and the Northeast has long been one of its most frequent targets. In a hard-hitting rap, artist Sonu Baroi calls it out with sharp, unapologetic lyrics.
We’ve seen socially conscious tracks before, like “Are You Indian?” by Rapper Big Deal—but Sonu’s song stands out for focusing squarely on the everyday discrimination faced by people from the Northeast.
“Chinky,” by Sonu Baroi, released three weeks ago, the track has resonated deeply, shedding light on the discrimination they face in their homeland.
While Sonu Baroi is the voice of “Chinky,” the song’s impact is amplified by the collective experiences of the Northeastern community. Individuals from states like Assam, Manipur, Nagaland, and others have long faced discrimination in various parts of India.

From the very first verse, Sonu Baroi confronts the casual racism Northeasterners face every day: the stares, the slurs, the stereotypes. The song holds nothing back as it exposes the uncomfortable truth that, while the rest of India celebrates diversity on paper, many from the Northeast are still fighting for basic recognition, respect, and a sense of belonging in real life. Through biting lyrics and sharp delivery, Sonu Baroi forces the country to listen.
The song also urges listeners to confront their biases, educate themselves about the diverse cultures within India, and stand against racism in all its forms.
“Born in India, they don’t see,
Say I look like Chinese
Call me Nepali, call me stray
Man, I’m home, this where I stay.”
These lines encapsulate the daily struggles faced by many Northeasterners who are often mistaken for foreigners and subjected to racial slurs. Sonu Baroi’s words challenge these misconceptions, asserting that despite prejudice, they belong and take pride in their heritage.

The song doesn’t dwell solely on one theme but also celebrates the rich culture and heritage of Northeast India. Baroi references the diverse states of the region, each with its unique identity:
“Ayo, from Arunachal
Where the dawn light glows
Mizo hills where the bamboo grows
Manipur warriors, kick so clean,
Nagaland vibes like a rockstar dream.”
The powerful track “Chinky” is the result of a collaborative effort led by Sonu Baroi, who took charge of the music, lyrics, arrangement, and video. Lending her voice to the song is singer Kunja Khwairakpam. The rap verse is delivered by Aman Pariyar. Together, this ensemble breathes life into a track that’s not just music, but a movement.
The video features artists including Wansaphi Mary Majaw, Jolly Mary Majaw, Jessica Kharumnuid, Trisidora Sohphoh, Esther Pyngrope, Eureka M Kharpuri, Baiakmen Warbah, and Bala Kyrkhu Kharumnuid, all of whom bring authenticity and heart to the visual storytelling.
